Overview

Situated within a small allotment garden the simple off-grid timber frame building provides a studio space with a separate store room. The building attempts to be as environmentally low-impact as possible.

Constructed off small pad foundations, the footprint is deliberately small and correlates with standard sizes of timber products to reduce wastage. The softwood timber frame is insulated with flexible wood fibre and wrapped with a wood-based insulated sheathing board; the exterior is then clad in cleft English Sweet Chestnut pales. In principle, the building can be dismounted and entirely recycled when it reaches the end of its life.

The interior scheme is derived from the rich colours of the surrounding Cornish Mining World Heritage Site landscape which is characterised by the mineral-rich coast which crashes into the deep green Atlantic.

The project was shortlisted for the Architects Journal Small Projects Award 2022.
