Bolthole

Overview

The brief was to create a cosy Cornish bolthole designed to be warm in winter and a cool, clean refuge come summer.

The carefully considered layout must accommodate and simplify the surf, salt, and sand routine that goes hand in hand with life beside the sea.

The Bolthole is a major renovation of a cottage on the north coast of Cornwall. The project involved opening up the ground floor of the building to make an open-plan living room and kitchen, a new oak stair was inserted and two new bedrooms and a bathroom were created upstairs.

A focus for the project was to sympathetically restore and reveal the existing structure using traditional building techniques such as lime rendering, which allows the old cob walls to breathe again. Whilst the design was focused on the internal layout and detailing, the external fabric of the building was left deliberately untouched and the rear wall has been left stained red from the iron ore in the mineral-rich landscape upon which the house sits.
